Madrid, the capital of Spain since 1562, is located in the heart of the Iberian Peninsula and is also the largest municipality in Spain. It is in the centre of the Castilian plain, 646-meters above sea level and also occupies the third position in the list of largest cities in Europe. In 2006, Madrid was the fourth most-visited city in Europe and the first in Spain, with almost seven million tourists.
